Rocky Mountain House ending decades-long ban on VLTs

Apr 8, 2020 | 6:00 PM

Town council in Rocky Mountain House has voted unanimously to repeal the March 4, 1997 resolution banning Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) within town limits.

“This is a long time coming, there has been business owners that have been asking for this for a while,” stated Councillor Jason Alderson.

Though it was not legislatively required, council held a public hearing on March 10, 2020 to allow the public to present their support or their opposition to bringing in VLTs. The meeting was attended by fewer than 20 people.

“Ultimately it comes down to people supporting VLTs by using them or they don’t use them. I’m glad we had the public meeting, and there were no major concerns and that was the place to have voiced it,” Alderson indicated.

Councillor Michelle Narang mentioned that she felt they did everything they should do to get public input and said that it was apparent to her how the community felt.

Mayor Tammy Burke made comment that she has heard from many residents that they fell it’s basically already in the community, it’s just not in machine form.

“I’ve had comments that people can gamble on their phone they can gamble on their computer. I think the real problem is to instead help people with counseling if they do have an addiction issue,” explained Burke.

There has been no date set yet for when businesses will be able to bring VLTs into their establishments.

Council adhered to physical distancing regulations by holding their meeting through a video conferencing application.
