Optimist Club of Red Deer raises over $1800 for 49th Street Youth Shelter

The Optimist Club of Red Deer was pleased to provide a sizeable donation to the 49th Street Youth Shelter after a successful virtual ‘Wine Survivor’ event.

The event, which began in mid-March, raised over $1,800 for the Youth Shelter. The funds raised support the operations of the shelter and their outreach activities.

17 teams of six participated from around central Alberta, with eight draws ultimately eliminating all but one team. The final draw took place on April 7 at the Optimist Club’s monthly meeting, held virtually, with the top three teams taking home corked prizes. Many elimination draws were held virtually as a way to connect the participants.

“With our current challenges, between reduced capacity as a result of COVID-19 and an increased need for outreach opportunities, the funds raised will help us continue to provide the supports we need for youth in crisis in our community,” said Rob Lewis, Executive Director of Youth HQ, which facilitates operations for the shelter.

“The Optimist Club of Red Deer is extremely pleased to support the 49th Street Youth Shelter, especially in these challenging times,” added Optimist Club Governor Les Trevor. “Anytime that we can be supportive in providing youth a safe place to call home is important to us. We will continue to work together with the community to ensure Red Deer youth have what they need to grow and prosper.”

The 49th Street Youth Shelter continues to be open 24/7 for youth aged 12 to 17 years old.

The Shelter currently has space for seven youth under the two-metre physical distancing rules for shelters in the province.

Outreach workers are available for family mediation, and parents and youth can reach out to the Shelter’s Crisis Line at 403-341-3190, or text 403-358-1517.
