Council Vacancy

Innisfail by-election slated for June

Mar 25, 2020 | 6:20 PM

Innisfail Town Council has passed a new bylaw that allows the Town to fund and conduct a municipal by-election this spring.

Former councilor Doug Bos resigned on Mar. 9, citing a need to dedicate more time to his business (Discovery Wildlife Park) in light of recent economic developments.

According to the Municipal Government Act (MGA), a by-election is required within 120 days of the resignation of a councilor.

The by-election has been scheduled for June 8. Advance voting days will be May 29-30. Town officials say public notices will be posted this week.

The bylaw passed allows council to approve the budgeted amount of $20,000 to fund the by-election from the Town’s 2020 Contingency.

Town officials note the by-election will utilize the same electronic voting system used in the 2017 municipal election.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s also acknowledged the by-election may not take place as currently planned or may be postponed, or see the vacancy filled during the next municipal election.

Nominations are open from now through April 24, and again on Nomination Day April 27 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Town of lnnisfail Municipal Building (4943 53 Street).
