Alberta adds new COVID-19 physician billing codes
The Alberta government is providing more options for virtual patient care as part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
New temporary physician billing codes are being added by the province to the schedule of medical benefits so that physicians are compensated for providing virtual care.
The province says that through these new health service codes, physicians will be paid the same rate as if the medical services were provided face-to-face, similar to billing codes established in other provinces, such as Ontario and British Columbia.
Family doctors can now charge $38 for a longer video or phone appointment with a patient, up from $20 per appointment. There’s no daily limit to the number of virtual appointments doctors can hold. The changes are retroactive to March 17.
