Rebels fall in overtime in Medicine Hat

Mar 11, 2020 | 12:35 PM

The Red Deer Rebels took the Medicine Hat Tigers to extra time Tuesday night but ultimately lost 4-3 in overtime to kick off a quick two game road trip.

Rebels goalie Ethan Anders came to play early in the first period, making a number of point-blank saves to keep the score tied at 0-0.

The Rebels went up 1-0 in very bizarre fashion 14:02 into the first period. Josh Tarzwell shot the puck on net, it deflected off of Tigers goalie Garin Bjorklund and hit the glass behind the net. The puck then jumped back through the air, hit Bjorklund’s back and rolled into the net for Tarzwell’s 32nd goal of the year.

The Tigers tied the game when Elijah Brown scored 17 seconds into a Ben King roughing penalty, 2:28 after the Rebels goal. From his knees, Brown jammed at a loose puck below Anders to put it over the goal line for his tenth of the year.

Medicine Hat made it 2-1 with 12 seconds to play in the first period on a short-handed goal. Ryan Chyzowski had the puck behind the net, walked out front and fired it on goal. The puck managed to find a hole and make its way through for his 33rd goal of the year.

Rebels defenceman Joel Sexsmith tied the game 2-2 when he drilled home a shot from the left side of the ice for his second goal of the season.

The Tigers went up 3-2 after scoring a powerplay goal with 3:56 left in the second period. Rookie Cole Sillinger scored his 22nd of the year after Brown shoveled the puck to the front of the net where Sillinger was to put it high past Anders.

The Rebels tied the game again with seven minutes to go in the game. Bains shot the puck in from the side of the net, banking it off of Bjorklund and in for his 18th of the year.

In overtime, Chyzowski ripped a bullet past Anders’ glove for his second of the night and the game winner.

Anders ended up turning aside 42 shots on the night but could not pick up the win.

The Rebels play again Wednesday night when they travel to Swift Current to play the Broncos for the second time in five days after the Rebels beat them 5-4 in overtime on Saturday.

The game begins at 7 p.m and you can listen live on 106.7 The Drive.
