Rebels lose 5-1 to rolling Chiefs squad

Mar 7, 2020 | 9:25 AM

The Red Deer Rebels fell to the Spokane Chiefs 5-1 Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium as the Chiefs extended their winning streak to eight games.

Spokane scored first, 7:07 into the game when Michael King fired a shot from the right point that found its way through a crowd and behind Rebels goalie Byron Fancy.

The two teams were at a stalemate for over thirty minutes of action before the Chiefs added to their lead. Red Deer had sustained pressure in the Spokane end before the Chiefs got a chance and made good on it. On a two on one, former Rebels prospect Eli Zummack threw a beautiful saucer pass over to WHL leading scorer Adam Beckman, who put it up top to make it 2-0 14:39 into the second period.

Under two minutes later, the Chiefs got another chance when Beckman brought the puck down the left wing on a three-on-one. Beckman threw it to the top of the slot for Smith who joined the rush, and the New Jersey Devils first-rounder stepped into a slapshot, putting it through Fancy to make it 3-0.

The Rebels were given a powerplay and a chance to get back into the game late in the period. They did just that after Jayden Grubbe threw the puck down low to Cam Hausinger. The 20-year-old made a nice play to bring the puck from below the goal line out front, beating James Porter Jr. making it 3-1 with 1:53 to play in the second.

53 seconds into the third, after Red Deer had a good chance to score one of their own, Spokane marched down the ice and made it 4-1. Beckman added his second goal of the evening after Leif Mattson slid the puck over to him for a one-timer past Fancy for his 46th goal of the season.

Beckman completed the hat trick with 1:42 left in the game on a powerplay. Bear Hughes won the draw to Smith and Beckman, all alone of the far side ripped a shot past Fancy to make it 5-1.

Both teams went 1-for-5 on the powerplay while the shots were 36-33 in favour of Spokane.

The Rebels fall to 22-33-2-3 on the season with eight games left to play starting Saturday night when the Swift Current Broncos come to town. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Westerner Park Centrium. You can listen to the game live on 106.7 The Drive.
