RDC Queens ready for ACAC Curling Championships this weekend in Red Deer

Feb 25, 2020 | 10:22 AM

The RDC Queens curling team is set to compete on home ice for a provincial title.

The ACAC Curling Championships go this Friday through Sunday at the Pidherney Curling Centre.

After a 3-3 record at the ACAC Fall Regional, the Queens earned a 5-1 standing at the Winter Regional. Overall, the Queens (8-4) finished tied with the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (8-4) and NAIT Ooks (8-4) for first place in the women’s division. Concordia University (6-6) was fourth.

After that exceptional performance, the Queens gained momentum and a better understanding of their full potential heading into the championships this weekend.

“The team probably wished they could have played ACAC’s right after the Winter Regional with the roll they were on,” said RDC Curling Head Coach Brad Hamilton. “I think the regional gave the team some confidence to know that if they curl well, they can beat anybody. They have defeated all of the championship teams except for Augustana.”

The Red Deer College student-athletes have been diligently preparing and fine-tuning their skills.

“Coach Eldon Raab and the team outlined a schedule for the five weeks leading up to the championships that should have the team ready to go again,” explained Hamilton. “Fortunately, they get great competition in their Tuesday night league games which keeps them sharp when they aren’t playing college games.”

Competing at the Pidherney Curling Centre provides familiarity to the RDC team.

“There should be some comfort playing on your home ice in terms of draw weight and knowing how much the ice curls,” stated Hamilton.

Hamilton expects a highly competitive three-day competition for the Queens.

“It should be a great weekend. I think any of the four women’s teams can win,” he said. “It should be a great battle to see which three teams get to go to nationals and who wins that ACAC banner. It usually comes down to who has the hot weekend.”

In their opening draw, the RDC Queens will play the NAIT Ooks on Friday, Feb. 28 at 4:15 p.m. Curling fans can attend for free.

The ACAC Championships schedule and results can be found online.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Curling Championships will take place from March 11-15 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.
