Premier to announce funding for Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre

It appears central Albertans won’t have to wait for the provincial budget to be tabled Thursday for news regarding provincial funding for local health infrastructure.

Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Health Tyler Shandro will announce new investments in the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Wednesday, according to a media release from the provincial government.

The announcement will be made during a news conference scheduled for 11:30 a.m at the hospital.

A lack of funding for hospital expansion has been a major concern of city council and local residents for well over a decade.

A report done a few years ago estimated expansion of Red Deer Regional Hospital would cost $750 million and would have to be done in phases.

In recent years, advocacy has been elevated in a bid to bring a cardiac catheterization lab to Red Deer Regional given local residents are at a much higher risk of death due to life-saving cardiac services being available only in Calgary and Edmonton.

Last week, the province announced a $137 million expansion for Calgary’s Peter Lougheed Centre. And demolition work got underway earlier this month for $85 million in expansion and upgrades to the Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton.
