Convoy rolling out again in support of Teck oil mine project

Feb 14, 2020 | 10:40 AM

The United We Roll Convoy is hitting the road again this Saturday through parts of central Alberta.

Last year, United We Roll led a convoy from Red Deer to Parliament Hill in Ottawa to promote the need for pipeline approval.

Founder Glen Carritt, who is also a town councillor in Innisfail, says this time around their primary focus is showing support for the Teck Frontier mine project, which is proposed for a site between Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan.

“We also want to bring awareness about these anti-oil activists and their illegal blockades which need to be addressed and shut down immediately,” Carritt says. “Our motto has always been peaceful and respectful protests, and what they’re doing is completely illegal and unacceptable.”

Carritt adds that with the Teck project expected to create 7000 jobs, it’s approval would be evidence to companies that Alberta is open for business. He also notes commitment shown by Teck to ensuring environmental standards are met.

Asked if there’s any increase in trust with the federal government since their initial convoy, Carritt says definitely not.

“A year later and we’re no further ahead; the protestors are still protesting, and they say that Kinder Morgan is going through, but is it? Are we still being impeded by protestors or will the project get finished? We still don’t have any progress with Quebec on Energy East either.”

Saturday’s convoy begins at Gorts (8001 Edgar Industrial Cr.) in Red Deer at 10 a.m.

It is scheduled to arrive at the park on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake at 10:20 a.m., at the Super Service in Eckville at 11:15 a.m., at NAPA in Innisfail at 12:45 p.m., and finally at the Quality Inn in north Red Deer at 1:30 p.m.
