Oil Kings score in dying seconds to beat Rebels 2-1

Feb 8, 2020 | 8:06 AM

It was another night, another heartbreaking last-minute loss for a young Red Deer Rebels squad Friday in Edmonton.

The Rebels gave up a goal with just seven seconds left to play resulting in a 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place.

It’s the second straight game in which the Rebels have allowed the game winning goal in the final minute after they dropped a 7-6 decision to Lethbridge Wednesday in Red Deer.

Red Deer jumped out to an early lead when Josh Tarzwell scored his 24th of the year when he shoveled the puck past Edmonton goalie Beck Warm 6:46 into period one. Jaxsen Weibe and Jayden Gruube earned helpers on the goal.

Right after Rebels defenceman Mason Ward took a boarding minor, it took just six seconds for the Oil Kings to tie the game as Dylan Guenter ripped shot past Rebels goalie Ethan Anders for his 20th goal of the year. The goal came just 40 seconds after Tarzwell’s game opening tally.

To finish off the first, Ward and Edmonton’s Josh Williams squared off in a tilt where Ward threw a right that caught an unguarded Williams up high before the linesmen came in.

The second period saw a couple powerplay chances go each way, but neither team was able to capitalize. In fact, neither team was able to capitalize on anything as the game remained tied 1-1 through 40 minutes.

The third period started off with Tarzwell taking a hooking call, giving a lethal Edmonton powerplay a third chance on the night. Anders made some big saves to hold the Oil Kings at bay and keep the game tied.

The second fight of the game came after Rebels forward Jaxsen Weibe laid a booming hit on Loeden Schauffer that he took exception to. The fight was more of a wrestling match before they hit the ice and sat for five.

When it looked like both teams were going to hang on for at least a point and take the game to overtime, the Rebels got caught up in a bad line change. Edmonton’s Riley Sawchuk zipped the puck to Dylan Guenter, who found Jake Neighbours for the game winner with 6.8 seconds on the clock. It was a beautiful goal that put a dagger in the hearts of Rebels fans and players.

Anders made 35 saves on a night where he played great and kept the Rebels in the game no matter how hard the Oil Kings pushed. Warm made 21 saves for Edmonton.

Red Deer falls to 17-28-2-3 while Edmonton continues their hot year and pucks up win number 35 on the year to go with 17 losses.

The Rebels play again Saturday at the Centrium as they welcome the Calgary Hitmen back to exorcize demons of the past with this team. The puck drops at 7 p.m., listen live on 106.7 The Drive.
