One of Red Deer’s best-known community leaders has been nominated for a national sports tourism award.

Lyn Radford is a finalist for Sport Event Volunteer of the Year at the 2020 Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance PRESTIGE Awards.

The PRESTIGE (Program Recognizing Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games & Events) Awards, now in their 14th year, honour exceptional sport events, people and organizations. This year’s awards will be handed out March 25 in Edmonton.

“We have a rich history of sport tourism in Canada, and the 2020 PRESTIGE nominations once again illustrate the breadth and depth of our industry,” said Rick Traer, CEO, Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance.

Radford was board chair for the 2019 Canada Winter Games which took place in Red Deer from Feb. 15 – March of last year. The largest event in our city’s history welcomed over 3,600 participants, 4,600 volunteers and 26,000 visitors to town, resulting in over $92 million in economic activity.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games is also a finalist for Sport Event of the Year (budget greater than $1 million) as well as the Sport Event Legacy of the Year award.
