COURT

Guilty plea from woman charged in stabbing death at Sunchild First Nation

Jan 27, 2020 | 6:46 PM

Sentencing will take place in March for a woman who admitted to the stabbing death of another woman on the Sunchild First Nation 13 months ago.

Chelsey Lagrelle, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in Red Deer provincial court on Monday and will be sentenced on Mar. 26.

Lagrelle was originally facing counts of manslaughter and assault with a weapon in relation to the Dec. 12, 2018 incident.

That’s when RCMP responded to a call about a person in distress on the Sunchild First Nation and arrived along with EMS to find a female victim deceased.

The victim was later identified as 25-year-old Samantha Sharpe.

Mounties say the suspect was arrested at a different location without incident and determined the victims and accused were known to each other.

On Monday, Judge Jim Hunter heard an Agreed Statement of Facts presented by Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor Ed Ring.

The facts indicate Lagrelle, her 24-year-old brother Ashton Lagrelle, and Sharpe, who was in a relationship with Ashton at the time, got together for some late night heavy drinking the night of Dec.11, 2018.

The trio eventually got into an argument, with Chelsey Lagrelle swinging a knife at her brother, cutting him in the face, then stabbing Sharpe twice, striking her in the heart and lungs.

Court heard on Monday that Lagrelle has since been in treatment and as part of her release conditions, has now been cleared for employment.

A joint submission from the Crown and defense is anticipated when Lagrelle is sentenced in March. A psychological assessment, pre-sentence report and Gladue report (for sentencing for First Nations and Metis offenders) will also be done.
