Sylvan Lake Library promotes literacy through board games

Jan 22, 2020 | 8:52 AM

SYLVAN LAKE- From 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on January 26, families in central Alberta can celebrate literacy in a way they might not expect: Playing giant board games at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

“Games, like books, promote concentration and stimulate imagination and creativity,” says Andrea Newland, Library Director at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

The event is a celebration of Family Literacy Day, which falls on Monday, January 27.

According to Life Literacy Canada, Family Literacy Day spreads the message that it is important for families to read together and spend time together doing other activities that promote literacy.

“It has been proven that children who see their parents reading or families who read with their children, will grow to become life-long readers,” says Newland.

At Life Size Games and Stories, playing Checkers, Four-In-A-Row, or Snakes and Ladders is a full body experience, and giant storybooks show families the big picture.

Registration is required for this event.
