Local Senior AA teams are getting ready for the start of North Central Hockey League playoffs.

The Blackfalds Wranglers (6-9-0-1), Lacombe Generals (7-8-0-1), and the Red Deer Rustlers (10-6-0-0) all begin postseason play this coming Saturday, January 25.

The Wranglers have game one planned for Saturday in Fort Saskatchewan against the second-seeded Chiefs. Despite being the lower seventh seed, Blackfalds managed to outscore the Chiefs 12-9 and won both of their head-to-head meetings in the regular season.

Game one of their playoff series goes at 8 p.m. Saturday in Fort Saskatchewan. Games two through five are yet to be announced.

The Lacombe Generals will play a first round series against the Daysland Northstars beginning Saturday. The Generals and Northstars split the season series with one win a peice, although Daysland will have home ice advantage for the series as the number three seed versus the sixth-seeded Generals.

Game one is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Daysland. Game two is to be played on February 1 back in Lacombe.

The Red Deer Rustlers and Devon Barons have been matched up as the four and five seeds in this year’s playoffs. The two teams have played each other twice in the last three weeks, with Red Deer winning both matchups by the score of 5-3 and 7-2.

Game one is scheduled for Saturday at the Penhold Multiplex at 7:30 p.m. Game two will be back in Devon on Jan. 31.

All series will be a best-of-five.

The teams will be battling for a chance to hoist the Vanberg Cup, the championship trophy of the NCHL. The two teams who make the Vanberg Cup Finals will also qualify for the Hockey Alberta Provincial AA tournament in Lethbridge.
