Lacombe Globe closing, final edition next week

A local newspaper that that was founded in 1900 is closing its doors.

Postmedia announced Monday that it is shutting down the Lacombe Globe. The paper will print its final edition on Jan. 16.

The announcement was shared in a post to the Lacombe Globe’s website.

“The closure is not a decision we take likely: we know that the Globe has been important to Lacombe and the surrounding area for the last 119 years,” Postmedia said. “Our staff has been proud to work in the service of the community through good times and bad. However, the newspaper is no longer financially viable.”

The Lacombe Globe was originally founded as the Western Globe by J.D. Skinner.

The paper closed its office last March with its archives moved to the Lacombe and District Historical Society.

Postmedia is also closing down the Edson Leader and Hinton Parklander weekly newspapers, which have been in publication since 1911 and 1955, respectively.

The Red Deer Express weekly newspaper, which had been in publication since the 1960s, closed last March.
