32-year-old suspect dies following confrontation with police near Hardisty

Dec 30, 2019 | 3:06 PM

HARDISTY, Alta. – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating a shooting involving RCMP officers.

According to ASIRT, the incident began when Killam RCMP attempted a traffic stop of a vehicle, at which point that vehicle rammed a marked RCMP vehicle twice and then fled. RCMP did not pursue.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, officers believed they had located the vehicle near Hwy 13 and Hwy 41, resulting in a pursuit westbound on 13. It ended thanks to the use of a spike belt and when the vehicle being pursued ended up in a ditch just east of Hardisty. The town of Hardisty is about 220 kilometres east of Red Deer.

The investigation suggests a confrontation occurred between police and the 32-year-old male suspect when he exited the vehicle. It’s said that multiple members discharged their firearms, resulting in serious injury to the man.

The suspect was treated on scene by EMS, and then taken to an Edmonton hospital in serious condition. He died later that night.

No police officers were hurt, and the suspect was the lone occupant of the truck, ASIRT adds.

A replica handgun was recovered from the snow outside the driver’s door of the suspect vehicle.

No further information will be released at this time.
