Optimist Chiefs set to battle at Mac’s Midget tournament
The puck drops today at the 42nd annual Mac’s Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament in Calgary, with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs set to take part once again.
The prestigious ice hockey tournament held annually from December 26 to January 1 was first held in 1978 as the CP Challenge Cup.
The tournament features 25 male teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe, with the championship game often held in front of as many as 10,000 spectators.
According to officials, tournament games see as many as 3,000 fans per game, the largest crowds many of the players will have played in front of at that point in their careers.
