Rural Alberta plagued by post office thefts

Dec 17, 2019 | 6:17 PM

Several communities across central Alberta have had their Canada Post office broken into this month.

The list of communities that have been hit so far includes:

– Delburne on Dec. 2

– Sangudo and Wabamun, Dec. 6

– Erskine and Botha, Dec. 8

– Clive, Dec. 11

– Swan Hills, Dec. 12

– Warburg, Dec. 16/17

Each of the robberies has occurred late at night or overnight when the post offices were closed.

Stettler RCMP reported that money and an undisclosed amount of stamps were stolen from the post office in Erksine at about 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 8 before parcels, packages and letters were stolen from the Erksine post office that same day.

Mounties believe those two burglaries were committed by the same people. Otherwise, there’s been no connection established at this time between any of the other post office thefts.

Alberta RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott recommends that residents, especially during the holiday season, check their mail as often as possible to lower the risk of losing out to thieves.

Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to call their local RCMP or police detachment, or Crime Stoppers.
