MURDER TRIAL

Closing arguments heard in Calgary quadruple murder trial

Dec 6, 2019 | 8:27 AM

CALGAR – Defence lawyers for a pair accused in a Calgary quadruple killing say the Crown has not proven its case.

The remains of Hanock Afowerk were found at the side of a rural highway in July 2017.

The Crown says he had been kidnapped, held for ransom and tortured.

Two days earlier the remains of three other people were found with gunshot wounds in Afowerk’s car.

Yu Chieh Liao and Tewodros Kebede have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in Afowerk’s death.

Liao has pleaded not guilty to being an accessory to the slaying of the people found in Afowerk’s car, Cody Pfeiffer and sisters Tiffany Ear and Glynnis Fox.

Kebede has pleaded not guilty to being an accessory to Pfeiffer’s murder.

Liao’s lawyer and Kebede’s lawyer say the Crown has not proven when and where Afowerk was killed.

They argue cellphone evidence that puts the accused at key locations cannot be trusted and that there was no evidence from the auto body shop where it’s believed Afowerk was killed.

The judge will give his final instructions to the jury on Monday.
