Rebels outshoot Broncos heavily but fall 6-4

Nov 26, 2019 | 9:23 PM

Putting pucks on net was not a problem for the Red Deer Rebels Tuesday night.

Unfortunately, scoring goals was as the Rebels came up short in a 6-4 road loss to the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action despite piling up 58 shots on goal.

As you might imagine, Broncos goalie Isaac Poulter earned first star honours on the night with his superb 54-save performance.

Former Rebels prospect Justin Svenson opened the scoring in the game with his first WHL goal 3:48 into period one.

After Brecon Wood made it 2-0 less than two minutes later, the Rebels tied the game in short order with a pair of goals just 23 seconds apart. Jaxsen Wiebe tipped home his fifth of the year at 15:08. Dawson Barteaux added his sixth goal of the year at the 15:31 mark.

Cohner Saleski, traded by the Rebels to Swift Current in the Nov. 7 deal that brought forward Ben King to Red Deer, gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead with his first WHL goal 15:46 into period two.

Jaxan Kaluski made it 4-2 early in the third. Eric Houk blew the game open just under three minutes later.

Christoffer Sedoff pulled Red Deer within 5-3 with a power play goal at the 11:26 mark.

But Wood struck for his second goal of the game, an empty netter with 1:33 left to play, to corral this one for the Broncos.

Arshdeep Bains would score his fifth goal of the year for Red Deer with less than nine seconds left to play to make it a 6-4 final score.

Byron Fancy went the distance in net for Red Deer, with Ethan Anders out day-to-day with a lower body injury, as the Broncos fired 22 shots on goal.

Red Deer was 2-for-4 on the power play on the night while Swift Current was 1-for-3.

Next up for the Rebels, who’ve now lost three straight, is a home game this Saturday versus the Regina Pats (7 p.m. at the Westerner Park Centrium). The radio broadcast on 106.7 The Drive begins at 6:30.
