Red Deer area unemployment rate drops in October

RED DEER- The Red Deer area unemployment rate fell in October to 7.3%.

That is down from 8% in September.

The Alberta rate rose a tenth from 6.6 to 6.7%.

Nationally, the number of people working across Canada edged lower in October. But Stats Canada says the unemployment rate held steady at 5.5%.

The agency says the economy lost 1,800 jobs in October, many in the manufacturing and construction sectors.

The number of full-time jobs fell by 16,100, while there were 14,300 more part-time jobs.

“Job numbers can fluctuate widely month to month. Nevertheless, today’s latest data from Statistics Canada is encouraging,” says Tanya Fir, Alberta’s Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism. “Yet with an inherited fiscal mess from the previous government and challenges from Ottawa, we know there is much more to do to get Alberta back on track.”
