AHS releases season’s first flu stats

Nov 8, 2019 | 10:50 AM

Alberta Health Services has released its first round of influenza statistics for the 2019/20 season.

Up to Nov. 2, AHS says there have been zero deaths from the flu in Alberta.

However, there have been 129 cases of lab confirmed case of influenza; 11 for strain A, and 28 for strain B.

In Central Zone, there have been seven confirmed cases of A, and zero of B, making the zone the only one still without a case of Influenza B.

Four people in Central Zone have been admitted to hospital for the flu, with 42 provincially.

More than 70,200 doses of influenza vaccine have been administered in Central Zone, just under 10 per cent of the 713,000 administered provincewide.

“It’s important to remember the influenza disease data we capture in our weekly updates is considered a mere fraction of the influenza activity that is actually impacting our friends, loved ones and neighbours,” says Dr. Jia Hu, AHS Medical Officer of Health.

“Not all cases of influenza are lab-confirmed and not all cases require hospitalization. However, by consistently sharing the influenza disease information that we do capture, we are still ensuring Albertans understand the stark reality of influenza.

Influenza immunization is currently available, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older.
