Fox Creek mother charged with abducting her children pleads guilty

Oct 30, 2019 | 5:07 PM

An Alberta woman charged for abducting her own children has changed her mind and entered guilty pleas.

Alberta Justice says that on Sept. 30 Charmaine Annette Darnel of Whitecourt admitted to charges of assault, threats to cause death or bodily harm, housebreaking with intent, and abduction of a person under 16.

Two other charges of abduction of a person under 16 will be addressed during her next court appearance which has been scheduled for Dec. 23.

Originally, Darnel had entered not guilty pleas on all six counts on Sept. 23 and requested trial by judge and jury.

Fox Creek RCMP were called at around 1:30 a.m. on June 1 after three children ages three years, four years, and nine months were abducted from their home in Fox Creek. An Amber Alert for the missing children was issued at approximately 5 a.m.

About two hours later, Sylvan Lake RCMP spotted the suspect vehicle involved in the abduction along Highway 20 north of Sylvan Lake. The three children were located unharmed inside the vehicle, along with their mother who was arrested.

A Lethbridge man also arrested in connection with this case, D’artangan Dirk Pool, is due in Grande Prairie court on Monday.
