Three RDC student-athletes were recently recognized at the conference level, after strong campaigns on the soccer pitch this season.

Alisha Coules made the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer South All-Conference team. Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto and Kyle Bett were selected to the ACAC Men’s Soccer South All-Conference team.

Coules received the honour after an outstanding season on forward with the Queens. The second-year was an energetic force on the field, consistently using her quickness and playing with heart and determination.

Despite missing a couple games, she still managed to score nine goals which ranked in the top ten of ACAC Women’s Soccer. The Bachelor of Science Nursing student’s three game-winning goals placed her in a tie for third in the league. She also added three assists.

“Alisha is such a good person and a really good player,” says Queens Head Coach Esad Elkaz. “She has all the necessary attributes that make her an effective forward. Her speed, skill and technique are just unbelievable.”

Coules was a positive teammate and often led by example. She worked efficiently, scoring on 50 per cent of her shots on goal. The student-athlete from Stettler played an integral role in the RDC Queens’ offense and was involved in 71 per cent of the team’s goals.

Neto, a second-year midfielder, and Bett, a third-year defender, helped lead the Kings to third place (7-3-2) in the south and a spot in the playoffs.

Neto recorded seven goals, placing the Business Administration General student in a tie for 12th in the league. One of his markers was a game-winner. He also added two assists and was one-for-one on penalty kicks.

Neto, from Fortaleza, Brazil, was a hard-working player on both sides of the ball, chipping in on offense and helping to stall the opponents’ attacks.

“PH (Pedro Humberto) is a key cog in our machine and when he is on his game, he is nearly impossible to deal with. A highly skilled player balanced with strength on the ball is hard to come by,” says Kings Head Coach Wade Groenewegen. “He and his family have made huge sacrifices for him to be a King these last two seasons, and I am glad to see some rewards coming back his way.”

Bett was very effective on defense all-season and he also played an important role moving the ball up field. Impressively, the Kinesiology student led his team with seven assists, which also placed him in a tie for second in the league.

Bett, who is from Calgary, started all 12 games and tirelessly logged a lot of minutes for the Kings, often playing against the top offensive players in the ACAC South Division.

“Kyle has been an engine for our team going on three years now. He started out as a midfielder and was very good at it, but as time and necessity dictated, we wound up shifting him to wingback where he has proven to be one of the best in the league,” says Groenewegen. “Kyle will move on next year and someone will fill the position, but he won’t be replaced.”

Neto, Bett and the Kings will compete in the quarter-finals against the Concordia University Thunder at the ACAC Men’s Soccer Championship on Friday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. NAIT is hosting the event.

The awards were presented at the ACAC Soccer Banquet & Award Presentations on Thursday, October 24, in the Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC) on NAIT’s Main Campus.
