making a comeback

Photo radar returning to Lacombe

Photo radar will be making a comeback in Lacombe four years after it was removed from the community.

City council voted 5-2 on Monday in favour of automated traffic enforcement as Lacombe looks improve safety at several high-risk intersections.

Lacombe police chief Lorne Blumhagen expressed his support for the initiative to council earlier this month, proposing that photo radar and red light cameras be used at Highway 2A and 50 Avenue, Highway 2A and Woodland Drive, and 50 Avenue and 63 Street.

According to police stats, collisions are up in Lacombe over the past couple of years from 210 in 2016 to 222 in 2017 and 236 last year.

It’s projected that the City of Lacombe will generate $325,000 annually through automated traffic enforcement. That revenue will be used to help build a $3 million reserve fund. Once the reserve has been built, revenue will be split evenly between the City of Lacombe and Lacombe Police Service capital reserves.

The motion approved by city council directs administration to prepare a request for proposal (RFP) for the delivery an automated traffic enforcement program in Lacombe. Proposals will be reviewed by the Lacombe Police Commission before presenting a recommendation to council for approval.

The City and LPS say they’ll be doing an education program starting three months prior to active enforcement and notify the public of the locations of all automated traffic enforcement devices.
