Meet the candidate: Tiffany Rose, Liberal Party of Canada

The Liberal candidate for Red Deer-Lacombe says she hopes to be a Member of the Parliament for the people, whether they live in an urban or rural setting.

Tiffany Rose, who is 42, says as someone who came to Red Deer with hopes of settling and raising her child, and as someone who was married to an oil and gas worker, she understands the diverse concerns and needs people are facing.

“One of the big things for me is that no one gets left behind, and that we make sure to take care of each other,” she shares.

“The big passion for me is mental health care. It’s something I’ve worked as an advocate for for a very long time and I’ve devoted my career to it. The Liberals’ plan to implement more funding for mental health care that is needs-specific to certain communities is really important.

“Here we see a lot of families that are split up; one parent is working up in a camp and the other is at home taking care of everything else, and there are specific mental health care needs that come up because of that work and lifestyle.”

Rose adds that as a woman, someone who is openly bisexual, and as a person who understands what it means to say ‘We are all Treaty people,’ she can be a strong voice for many different groups.

She was also asked about her decision to run for the Liberals even after party leader Justin Trudeau’s black and brownface controversy became international news.

“I do have to admit I had some misgivings about running for the party. However, whenever something like this comes up, it is really important for white people to listen to people of colour. What I heard from a lot of people of colour who commented about this is that it is racist, embarrassing and upsetting, however the work the Liberal Party has done for immigrants since, and the things other parties are campaigning on are more concerning to them,” Rose explains.

“It’s not to say Trudeau gets off the hook or that it’s excusable, but one of the other things I was contemplating in deciding whether or not to run for the party was can I be more effective towards change within the party from the outside or the inside?”

She says Trudeau’s response and apology sufficed for her because he committed to doing better.

Rose is originally from Ottawa and has lived in central Alberta since 2006.
