Lacombe considers photo radar at problem intersections
Four years after dumping it, the City of Lacombe is considering bringing back photo radar in a bid to improve safety at three high-risk intersections.
Lacombe Police Commission Chair Bob Huff and Lacombe Police Service Chief Lorne Blumhagen have presented city council with a proposal that includes installing photo radar and red light cameras at Highway 2A and 50 Avenue, Highway 2A and Woodland Drive, and 50 Avenue and 63 Street in an effort to reduce traffic collisions.
There is also a request to hire one Community Peace Officer to monitor, approve and attend court hearings involving all Automated Traffic Enforcement matters. The position would be under the Lacombe Police Service to ensure all enforcement is in line with policing priorities.
The City of Lacombe would contract with a private company to provide equipment, processing and technical support, while the Lacombe Police Service would oversee and direct daily operational procedures for automated traffic enforcement.
