Red Deer parents warned of possible child luring incidents

Sep 26, 2019 | 3:39 PM

Red Deer’s two largest school divisions are alerting parents this week of unconfirmed child luring incidents that have been reported.

Letters were sent out Wednesday by Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and Thursday by Red Deer Public Schools.

RCMP say two incidents are being investigated, the first of which took place on Monday east of Red Deer near Range Road 265 and Highway 11.

Cst. Derek Turner says it appears that incident may have been a misunderstanding between a young person and a man trying to drum up business for his driveway paving company.

The other incident took place Tuesday afternoon when a school bus was dropping a student off near their home in the Glendale area.

In that case, a student was approached by an adult male who attempted to grab their arm. Turner says the youth described the suspect male as “high” or acting weirdly.

The letter issued by Red Deer Public Schools on Thursday was not in relation to any additional incidents, but rather as a general safety reminder in light of the previous two involving Catholic students.

“The safety and security of our students is our highest priority. Our teachers will be speaking to their students to remind them how to respond when approached by a stranger, street safety, and the precautions they should take when walking to and from the bus or school. We are asking parents to follow up with these discussions at home,” reads one of the letters from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

Both school divisions suggest establishing a buddy system, keeping a safe distance from strangers, and avoiding back alleys and empty lots, among other things.
