MPC approves six-story addition adjacent to Points West Living

Red Deer’s Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) has given the green light for a new addition to an existing senior’s home on the west side.

A development permit was granted Tuesday for a six-story, 150 unit assisted living facility adjacent to Points West Living on Taylor Drive, north of 67 Street.

The new facility will be connected to the north side of the current Points West Living building completed in 2016 and contain commercial uses, as a minimum, on the ground floor, with the units themselves a combination of living and long-term care units.

Commercial uses anticipated include administrative offices for the operation of the building, a hair salon, daycare facility, lease space and a multi-purpose room available for rent by the public. Officials add however that all commercial uses would front onto Taylor Drive.

In addition, 92 parking stalls are planned for the site, with the building itself to be finished with triple glazed windows, precast textured concrete panels in a variety of colours and a timber pergola and canopy to accent the ground floor.

Tara Lodewyk, director of planning services for the City of Red Deer, says seeing development happen on a vacant site is great for the community.

“There are economic benefits in regards to jobs, there are benefits in having more assisted living spaces within our community and this will be a benefit to also being on the north side of the community and serving those residents there,” she explains. “The approval was granted today and we do advertise the decision in case there is an appeal and people have the right to appeal within two weeks. Provided nobody appeals, the application is formally approved and the developer can proceed with his plans.”

Lodewyk notes a developer has one year to begin construction once granted a development permit and believes the applicant intends to start building this fall.
