Rebels fall to Tigers in preseason action

Sep 13, 2019 | 9:45 PM

The Red Deer Rebels fell 5-3 to the Medicine Hat Tigers in WHL preseason action Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium.

It was a game in which both teams stormed out quickly before things settled in through the final forty minutes.

Medicine Hat opened the scoring 6:42 into the game when Ryan Chyzowski tipped home a wrist shot past Rebels goalie Ethan Anders.

Arshdeep Bains tied it for Red Deer less than three minutes later when he parked himself in the slot and slapped home a rebound.

Zak Smith gave the Rebels their first lead at 11:32 with a shorthanded breakaway tally, tucking the puck through the five-hole of Tigers netminder Evan Fraudette.

The Tigers roared back with two goals just nine seconds apart, Cole Sillinger with the first followed by Jonathan Brinkman Andersen, late in the period to make it a 3-3 game through 20 minutes.

Medicine Hat took a 4-3 lead 5:21 into period two on a nice power play snipe from Cole Clayton.

Chyzowski sealed the deal for Medicine Hat with a long distance empty net tally with a minute left to play in the third.

“I thought it was kind of a sloppy game. Young guys need to learn to keep their focus. There is no such thing as an easy game in this league,” Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter lectured afterward.

“The third goal can’t happen. That was a bad goal but again you don’t two points this time of year and I want this group to understand there needs to be preparation and focus every day.

“I didn’t think some of our young guys played well enough for us early on. I thought they got better on. I thought there was a few veterans who weren’t very good for us as well.”

Medicine Hat outshot Red Deer 31-24 on the night. The Tigers were 1-for-6 on the power play while the Rebels were 0-for-2.
