The Alberta government says it’s funding 4,000 addiction treatment beds and spaces, outpatient services and medically assisted detox spaces.

It’s part of the $140 million dollars for addiction and mental health care announced by the UCP in the last election campaign.

“We promised Albertans we’d help eliminate the barriers to recovery for every family,” said Premier Jason Kenney while making the announcement at an addictions conference in Calgary. “More publicly funded treatment spaces will make it easier and faster to get important addiction and mental health care.”

The plan will be rolled out over the next four years.

Kenney says his government will also unveil a mental health and addiction advisory council in the coming weeks to help combat Alberta’s opioid problem.

“Our government committed to improving access to addiction recovery and mental health care for all Albertans. This funding is the first step towards making sure anyone facing addiction and mental health challenges can get well, improve their quality of life and find their path to long-term recovery,” added Jason Luan, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.
