magic scoring mix?

Rebels lean on veteran trio for scoring punch

Sep 9, 2019 | 3:51 PM

Friday’s WHL preseason game at the Westerner Park Centrium offered a first look at what could end up being the top line for the Red Deer Rebels to start the regular season.

The trio featuring 19-year-old Josh Tarzwell and 20-year-olds Brett Davis and Cameron Hausinger combined for six points in a 3-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

It certainly makes sense to try the three veterans together as each player on their own has shown the ability – at times – to put the puck in the net on a regular basis. Combining their talents could prove invaluable as the Rebel search for offence following the graduations of Brandon Hagel, Reese Johnson and Jeff de Wit.

Tarzwell enters his third season with his hometown club. In 67 games last season, he showed flashes of scoring potential while collecting 11 goals and 28 points. There’s no doubt the Red Deer native wants to build on those totals in 2019-20.

Davis and Hausinger have chemistry dating back to their time together with the Kootenay Ice before coming to Red Deer via trade in November.

Davis netted seven goals and 19 points in 24 games with the Rebels while Hausinger had eight goals and 17 points in 27 games.

On a roster filled with young forwards, a big season from these three would go a long way towards the Rebels pushing for a playoff spot this season.

The Rebels made a tweak to their forward ranks Monday afternoon by sending 18-year old forward Alex Morozoff to the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for a 5th round selection in the 2021 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. Morozoff is entering his third year in the WHL, he’s played 94 games with the Rebels, scoring 14 goals and 9 assists for 23 points.

The Rebels continue their preseason this Friday, Sept. 13 at the Centrium versus Medicine Hat (7 p.m.) and will wrap up Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Calgary.
