TRAIN DERAILMENT

Southern Alberta train derailment under investigation

Sep 3, 2019 | 6:49 AM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY- The Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team of investigators to the site of a train derailment that prompted an evacuation yesterday morning.

There were rail cars leaking octane near the village of Barons.

The evacuation order was lifted later in the afternoon allowing area residents to return home.

A statement on Lethbridge County’s website says fire crews in coordination with Canadian Pacific Railway contained the octane leak from the overturned rail cars.

There has been no word on how many people were affected by the evacuation but the province said it included Keho Lake and nearby campgrounds, and local officials said it also included a golf course.

Lethbridge County Reeve, Lorne Hickey, noted the situation could have been much worse, as other cars on the train were carrying anhydrous ammonia.

If those cars had been compromised, the evacuation site would have needed to be doubled.

There have been no reports of injuries.
