The Red Deer Rebels brought their 2019 Training Camp to a close Saturday at the Westerner Park Centrium with the annual Black and White Game.

In an evenly played, fairly entertaining game, Team Black came back for a 4-3 shootout victory over Team White.

Second-year forward Blake Sydlowski opened the scoring for Team White 11:48 into the game when he took a pass from Red Deer product Keaton Sorensen and ripped home a wrist shot from.

Veteran Cameron Hausinger replied for Black with a minute left in the period.

15-year-old defenceman and 2019 second round bantam draft pick Hunter Mayo, and fourth-year Rebels forward Chris Douglas scored in period two to give White a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Braden Fischer, a 16-year-old forward and former Brandon Wheat Kings draft pick, scored early in period three for Team Black to make it a 3-2 game.

With an extra attacker on the ice, 2018 first round pick Kyle Masters tied the game for Team Black with 39.2 seconds left to play with a seeing eye wrist shot from the point.

The game went to 3-on-3 overtime, which solved nothing despite several good scoring chances at both ends. Team Black won the shootout in round nine by a 5-4 margin.

Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter was quite pleased with what he saw during Saturday’s game, and throughout training camp.

Ethan Anders got the start in goal for Team White and allowed one tally before giving way to Chase Coward.

Byron Fancy started for Team Black and allowed a pair before giving way to Eric Ward, who allowed a goal on his first shot against before shutting the door the rest of the way.

The Rebels announced a number of roster moves following the game.

Forwards being reassigned include Hunter Brown, Declan Cosford, Braden Fischer, Parker Lalonde, Jhett Larson and Connor Poppenroth. On defense, Jeremy Hancock will be reassigned, and in net, Chase Coward will return to his minor club.

The Rebels have 33 players left on their roster.

They’ll open preseason play Tuesday night in Edmonton.
