Welcome to Hogwarts coming to Sylvan Lake Municipal Library

Things are getting magical at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

On Sept. 5 at 4:00-5:30 p.m., a Welcome to Hogwarts event will invite people of all ages to make their own wands, brew potions, and play Harry Potter themed games like Quidditch, the wizarding world’s version of football.

People can register for the event in person at the library, by emailing sylvan.library@prl.ab.ca, or by calling the library at 403-887-2130.

This family-friendly, all-ages event will kick off the library’s Hogwarts Reading Club, a competition that runs September, 2019 to June, 2020.

However, people do not have to participate in the reading club to attend Welcome to Hogwarts.

“Even people who are not die-hard fans of Harry Potter will have fun at Welcome to Hogwarts,” said Corrie Brown, Programmer at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library. “The same goes for the Hogwarts Reading Club. People can just have a great time reading whatever they like to read and competing to win prizes.”

Each person who joins the Hogwarts Reading Club will choose a House, which is the Harry Potter word for “team.”

Members keep track of the number of pages they read, which gives their House points.

There are also challenges to complete that help readers earn more points for their House.

The Hogwarts Reading Club has a category for adults and a category for Grades 1 to 12.
