TRAINING CAMP

Barteaux, Sedoff key pieces for Rebels defence corps

Aug 26, 2019 | 7:30 AM

Whether you were a veteran or rookie, players taking part in Red Deer Rebels Training Camp were left sucking wind, as they say, following high-tempo opening practices on Saturday.

Dawson Barteaux was no exception as the fourth year blue liner admitted the start to camp was pretty taxing.

With Alexander Alexeyev moving on to pro hockey and Carson Sass gone to Tri-City, the Dallas Stars prospect, who recorded 34 points in 67 games last season, becomes perhaps the cornerstone of the Rebels defence corps this season.

That being said, Barteaux, 20-year-old Ethan Sakowich, Jacob Herauf, Colin Paradis, Finnish import Christoffer Sedoff and rookie Kyle Masters have the makings of a good group overall.

Sedoff was especially put to the test on Saturday, his first time skating on North American ice since last year’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

“I love it very much, it’s awesome to be on ice,” he said. “Finding my legs. It’s always the first skate.”

When asked whether there’ll be some difficulty adjusting to playing on narrower ice, Sedoff said, “Maybe a little while. I think guys (WHL players) are good and I’m going to be also with them.

“I’m very good two-way ‘D’ who likes to get pucks to the forwards . . . jump up with the forwards.”

With a group of forwards made up largely of 16-18 year olds, Rebels defenceman will be counted on, especially early on, to provide a stabilizing presence on and off the ice.
