Red Deer’s Bergheim wins Alberta Junior Tour boys championship

Aug 25, 2019 | 1:20 PM

The 24th season of the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour is officially in the books after wrapping up this weekend at Ponoka’s Wolf Creek Golf Resort.

Cole Bergheim of Red Deer is the boys champion, winning with a 1-over 71. The highlight of the 16-year-old’s round was an eagle on par-5 6th hole.

Two golfers tied for second at +3.

Bergheim recently won gold at the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current.

Meantime, 13-year-old Jayla Kucy of Camrose is the girls champion. She fired an 80 in difficult conditions on a course that isn’t easy at the best of times.

She becomes the first back-to-back girls tour champion in a decade.

Kucy will now compete in the Alberta Golf Bantam Girls Championship at Red Deer’s River Bend Golf and Recreation Area August 26 and 27. She also won that tournament last year.
