Rocky making moves to be an environmental leader

Aug 22, 2019 | 2:49 PM

Rocky Mountain House has been doing its part in becoming an environmental leader by using water -friendly plants around town and charging for extra water consumption to incentivize residents to use less, to name a few of the initiatives.

Now they are looking to develop a property assessed clean energy (PACE) financing program.

What the Town has planned is to allow residents and businesses to borrow from the Town to help finance eligible projects, such as high efficiency lighting, HVAC upgrades, water heating and solar panels.

Repayment on the loans would be added on to municipal property taxes, but would not be allowed to exceed double what they owe, and could also pay off the borrowed amount at any time without penalty.

Communications Coordinator for the Town of Rocky Mountain House Laura Button says the plan is for those eligible for this program be the legal owner of the property and be current on both their tax and mortgage payments.

Button told Town Council that a working group for the project is already underway to ensure the feasibility of the PACE program.

During a recent Town Council meeting, it was asked if people borrowing money would add to the Town’s debt. Chief Administrative Officer Dean Krause assured council, it would not.
