Museum cleaning up from early morning vandalism

A seemingly senseless act of vandalism has temporarily closed the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) Tuesday morning.

Executive Director Lorna Johnson says they received a call shortly after 2:00 a.m. that something had happened to the building’s front doors.

“As far as we can tell, somebody threw two great big rocks through the front doors of the museum,” she explains. “They smashed the glass, both the outside door and the inner door but they didn’t come into the museum, so we have a cleanup to deal with this morning.”

As a result, Johnson says the building will be closed while the doors are being repaired.

“It’s kind of shocking,” she admits. “It really makes us think about better security procedures but we’re feeling lucky that they didn’t come in and do any greater damage inside the building. It just seems like a random act of vandalism.”

Johnson says there is no damage estimate as of yet but anticipates the MAG to reopen Tuesday afternoon.

RCMP are investigating.
