The west central Alberta town of Rocky Mountain House is in shock after a woman was killed and her sister injured in what police are calling a domestic homicide case.

Rocky RCMP responded just after 7:30 p.m. Friday to several 911 complaints of a male with a gun inside a residence near 50 Avenue and 59 Street Close.

The male had left by the time members arrived. RCMP located two adult women at the scene, including a 28-year-old woman who was found dead.

The other woman, the deceased’s 29-year old sister, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital before being released.

Three children inside the home were not harmed, according to police.

A 44-year-old man turned himself into Rocky Mountain House RCMP and remains in custody.

RCMP confirm this was a domestic situation. Charges are pending and police are not seeking any further suspects.

No further information has been released. RCMP South Major Crimes Unit is investigating.

Saturday evening, Rocky Mountain House Mayor Tammy Burke issued a statement regarding the tragic incident.

“Rocky Mountain House is saddened by the tragic and senseless event that took place in our community. A young mother’s life was lost due to a domestic situation. Her injured sister and their whole family are in our thoughts,” Burke said.

“Our municipal RCMP police force has assured us that there is no threat to public safety.

“I know our residents are shocked and saddened by this tragedy. As a community grieving, we need to offer support wherever possible. Please respect the privacy of the family that is grieving at this time.”

Burke concluded by saying, “On behalf of Rocky Mountain House town council and staff, I would like to offer sincere condolences to the family.”
