Red Deer Royals earn gold marks in Calgary

The Red Deer Royals are basking in the glow of a gold medal standing earned at the World Association of Marching Show Bands Competition (WAMSB) held at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary this past weekend.

Following the World Championship Final on Monday, the Royals finished fifth overall with a final score of 88.5000, earning a Gold Medal achievement level in the international competition which features more than 20 of the globe’s best show bands.

According to the event’s website, the WAMSB saw teams this year travel from as far away as Nigeria, Mexico, Taiwan and Germany, in addition to having some of the best in Canada perform, including the Calgary Stampede Showband which finished first overall, with a final score of 94.8333.

The Chien Kuo High School Marching Band from Taiwan placed second with a score of 93.8889, while the Calgary Stetson Show Band placed third, achieving a score of 90.6389. Fanfarenzug Strausberg from Germany finished fourth with a score of 89.5556 to round out the top five just ahead of the Royals.
