A community celebration of a life lost is taking place on Saturday in Riverside Meadows.

Barb Dohl (1948-2019) passed away earlier this month from cancer, just days after being honoured with a Mayor’s Recognition Award for Community Building.

A committed volunteer, Dohl is said to have strived to build up the neighbourhood of Riverside Meadows.

“Over the last twenty years, she has volunteered at every community event and ran the ‘skate shack’ at the community rink in the winters,” says Chad Krahn, Vice President, Riverside Meadows Community Association.

“Several years ago, she noticed that many of the kids coming to the rink didn’t have skates so she found grants and other money to buy skates. Today the Riverside Meadows community rink is the only rink that provides skates free of charge for anyone who comes to the rink. That is just a little piece of the legacy Barb has left in our community.”

On Saturday, a charity BBQ is being held in support of Barb’s family.

The event runs from 11:30-2 at the Riverside Meadows Community Centre (6021 57 Avenue). Lunch is by donation and there will also be a silent auction, raffle and prizes.
