STEPHAN RE-TRIAL

Stephan family midwife/nurse called to testify on day one of re-trial

LETHBRIDGE- The second trial of an Alberta couple charged in the meningitis death of their toddler son in 2012 heard from a pair of witnesses yesterday who recommended they get medical help for their son.

David and Collet Stephan were granted a new trial by the Supreme Court last year, which overturned their conviction of failing to provide the necessaries of life for their 19-month-old son Ezekiel.

He was treated with alternative therapies until he stopped breathing and later died of bacterial meningitis.

Both the Stephan’s midwife and the receptionist at a naturopath in Lethbridge suggested they seek medical advice when he failed to get over what the parents thought was the flu.

David Stephan told reporters he still thinks the odds are stacked against them in this trial.

The trial will hear from the naturopath, a paramedic and 911 operators today.

The re-trial is expected to continue for the next month.
