Crews respond to ruptured gas line

May 24, 2019 | 12:02 PM

Crews responded to a gas leak near River Road just off 60 Street at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

“A contractor was doing some demolition work with some heavy equipment and ended up breaking a gas line which then had natural gas emitting into the atmosphere,” explains Shawn St. Peter Deputy Fire Chief at Clearwater Regional Fire Service.

Until ATCO was able to shut off the gas, fire crews evacuated the nearby Rocky Mountain Estates Trailer Park for roughly two hours.

Fire crews along with RCMP were involved to help with traffic control and evacuations. The Christenson Sports and Wellness Centre was opened up to give affected residents a place to stay.

“Some individuals were transported to the hospital through the ambulance service just as a precaution because of their medical needs and that they had nowhere else to go,” says St. Peter. “At the end of the day nobody was hurt.”

ATCO gas was able to mitigate the issue within a couple of hours and everyone was able to return home with no injuries.
