Transgender flag raised to mark day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia

The flag representing those who are transgender was raised at the Super 8 in north Red Deer on Friday afternoon.

The act happened in concurrence with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

It also comes three days after Central Alberta Pride representatives raised the traditional rainbow Pride flag downtown to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada.

Bobbi-Jo Elizabeth, Board Chair of Red Deer-based Trans and Non-Binary Aid Society (TANAS), said raising the flag represents the rights her brothers and sisters haven’t always had.

“It’s important to not forget about the other folks in our community that make up the smaller minorities because those are the ones who are going to help us brave tomorrow,” she said.

“They are also the ones who are helping build the foundation for future generations and helping them to be brave enough to come out and be authentic to themselves.”

Hoisting of the flags on Tuesday and Friday was made possible by the ‘Affichons nos couleurs – Standing by our Colours’ project in partnership with Calgary Pride, and the goal of organizing rainbow pride flag raisings in 50 Canadian Cities.
