RDC recognizes shared values with BGIS

Red Deer College has recognized this week a long-time partner and key contributor to its Shaping Our Future campaign.

On Wednesday, RDC recognized BGIS at an event in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre/Centre des Jeux du Canada Gary W. Harris for their donation toward building the facility.

College officials say the meeting room adjoining the Ice Arena’s first floor entrance has been named the BGIS Geothermal Room.

The naming is described as a fitting tribute and demonstrates the commitment both organizations share toward environmental stewardship, conservation and alternative energy.

Officials say the BGIS Geothermal Room is heated and cooled by a geothermal loop that was installed beneath the Centre, and this unique temperature regulation demonstrates another alternative energy solution at RDC, in addition to the 4,190 solar panels installed across the College.

Naming of the BGIS Geothermal Room, an innovative meeting and learning space, is also said to underscore RDC and BGIS’s shared commitment to growing alternative energy education and implementation in central Alberta.

“I would like to congratulate the RDC leadership team on realizing their vision for this state-of-the-art facility,” says Gord Hicks, CEO, BGIS, in a press release. “We are delighted to contribute to its development and to showcase some of the clean building technologies that exist to transform the built environment to net zero.”

RDC’s relationship with BGIS, through its various entities, has spanned more than 30 years.

The partnership includes on-site BGIS employees delivering service and support to RDC facilities, and contributing to the experience of the College’s learners, staff and visitors.

In this way, the partnership between the institutions is said to be critical to the operation of the College, with employees of both organizations considering each other valued coworkers.

“We are very grateful for the support and assistance of our partners, such as BGIS, who are committed to innovation, education and environmental stewardship,” adds Joel Ward, RDC President & CEO. “This allows RDC to dream bigger and to plan for even more opportunities for our students and community members. This particular project relates to the shared values that RDC and BGIS both have for alternative energy solutions, and the BGIS Geothermal Room will help to tell RDC’s story of sustainability initiatives as we work toward new goals for our College, including Net Zero.”
