A local high school student has been offered one of Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) scholarships.

Allison Guthrie, a grade 12 student at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School in Red Deer, has been offered $80,000 to attend the University of Calgary after being selected for a prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship.

School officials say 25 scholarships are valued at $100,000 for engineering, with another 25 scholarships valued at $80,000 for science and math.

Scholarship qualifications are said to include all award recipients being entrepreneurial-minded high school students enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or math program at 20 partner universities across Canada.

Officials point-out every high school in Canada can nominate one graduating student each year to apply for the scholarship.

Red Deer Catholic Regional School officials say Guthrie whose favourite subject is genetics, will enter the plant biology program after thoroughly enjoying Biology 20 and 30.

Guthrie is described as an active member of the community and has spent the past four years singing with the ihana Youth Choir where she sings as a second soprano. She also ran a blood drive last semester at the school.

Guthrie is also said to feel fortunate to have participated in various programs at universities by working in labs and attending science fairs.

She is also described as being passionate about science and has created a Science Club at the school for other students to engage in science-related activities.

Guthrie thanks her family, teachers and mentor for the support over the years.

“We are so proud of Allison’s many accomplishments and strong work ethic, which make her a most deserving recipient of the Schulich Scholarship,” says Principal, Rose McQuay, École Secondaire Notre Dame High School. “She is excited to be able to use this money, not only for post-secondary, but to help advance her research focus as well. We have no doubt that Allison has a very successful career ahead of her and we wish her all the best on her journey.”
