Blackfalds rink society excited for fundraiser, unveiling of plans

Ahead of its largest fundraiser to date this weekend, the Dual Ice Development Society in Blackfalds is excited for what the future holds.

The society, part of a community effort to raise $1 million towards the expansion of the Blackfalds Multiplex, is hosting its first ‘Raise the Rink’ event Saturday with special guest Hayley Wickenheiser. Organizers hope to raise $50,000 to $60,000 at the event. .

In January, the Town of Blackfalds selected ACI Architects to lead the project. Since then, Society president Karen Sernecky says design plans for the project have come along nicely.

“We met with the architect recently, and they laid out the plans for us,” Sernecky says. “It’s still within the discussion stage, but we asked our questions, and the architects are amazing. They’d already thought of everything we’d thought of for questions, and we’re actually presenting the scale picture of what the arena is going to look like on Saturday.”

Sernecky says when the public gets to see the plans, they’ll be blown away.

“It is absolutely beautiful, and it’s going to implement a lot of other things into the arena which is fantastic because that’s what we were hoping for with this expansion is it could implement the capability for sporting events and concerts, and a library.

“It’s going to be a big deal for our community,” she concludes.

Tickets for Raise the Rink are available online until Friday night. They won’t be sold at the door.
