Alberta falls to Ontario in ringette quarterfinals

Feb 20, 2019 | 9:18 PM

The atmosphere at the Collcutt Centre was electric Wednesday night as Alberta took on undefeated Ontario in quarterfinals action of the 2019 Canada Winter Games ringette tournament.

In the end, Ontario was able to rally in the fourth quarter to knock off the scrappy Albertans 8-6.

After a scoreless first, Alberta jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Marla Wheeler fired one past Ontario goalie Janna Griffioe’s shoulder. Madeline Maclean would answer for Ontario shortly after, and the teams would trade goals after and headed into halftime tied 2-2.

Just over three minutes into the third, Claire Wyville snuck one in to give Ontario the lead back, and they would sit on that lead until goals from Alyssa Hall and Victoria Shennan put Alberta up by one.

Then with 1:25 left in the 3rd, Emma Kelly was sprung on a break away, and she made no mistake. The teams headed into the final frame deadlocked at 4-4.

In the fourth, Ontario came out firing, and just under a minute in Paige Miller put Ontario gave a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Another goal from Wyville along with tallies from Emily Power and Marta Matuszewski would put the game out of reach.

Alberta did score two goals with under two minutes remaining to make it interesting, but it was too little, too late as Ontario remained undefeated at the tournament.

Alberta now plays New Brunswick next for a chance to play in the fifth place game. The two teams played in the round robin, with Alberta prevailing, 6-4.

Ontario will take on BC in one semifinal (Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Downtown Arena) while Manitoba battles Quebec in the other (3:00 p.m Downtown Arena).
