Education minister slams UCP leader

EDMONTON-  Provincial education minister David Eggen says Opposition Leader Jason Kenney is being ignorant, deceptive, and deceitful about the ongoing curriculum review for all school grades.

Eggen says he rejects Kenney’s claim that the NDP is injecting its worldview into the curriculum rewrite.

He adds Kenney’s accusations are nothing better than a “drive-by shooting” on kids’ education.

The Notley government is currently reworking the curriculum for the core subjects in a multi-year process.

The changes will emphasize the basics but also focus on broader issues of social dynamics and interactions, like respecting diversity and minorities, and embracing plurality and inclusivity.

Kenney says he worries that the basics of not only math and science, but basic facts on Canadian history and geography, will get lost in the process.

He says if his party wins the spring election, they will pause the review, do some consultations, and make sure the final curriculum has a balanced approach.
